Where the wild things are

Here's an interesting article on the psychology behind Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are.

Sendak’s work in Where the Wild Things Are is of particular interest to psychologists due to his strikingly unusual abilities to gain access to, and to represent in words and pictures, fantasies that accompany childish rage states. It is this capacity, I believe, that contributes to the appeal of his work to children who are unable or unwilling to articulate these states, and to adults who have forgotten them or do not wish to know about them. The other two books in the set show similar insights.

I just read this book for the first time to my kindergartners.  They LOVED it.  It's always amusing to ask them if they would like to go to where the wild things are.  Most of them said they would rather stay at home with mom.

Keanu Reeves to star in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?!?

I don't think Keanu Reeves has the acting chops to pull off Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  However, I'll probably go see it because it's being directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. 

Unlike the bloggers who reacted with skepticism to the idea of Keanu Reeves playing Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde, Refn thinks that Reeves could be an extraordinarily effective casting decision precisely because of that audience cynicism. "I think Keanu is a very interesting personality." Refn offered. "I do think that there's a great movie within him. I think his visual look is very interesting. So I think that what makes it exciting is that he's a non-obvious choice, but he actually adds a great sense of curiosity to the film."

I still have my doubts.  I'd rather watch Mads Mikkelsen as the lead character because he's officially my new favorite actor.  (Sorry, Johnny.)  I'm in the middle of Netflixing all of his films.  I think he's brilliant.  He's also in EVERY Danish movie that has recently been released in the past 10 years.

Blind Woman Can See Again After a Tooth Is Implanted in Her Eye

A woman blind for the past nine years can see 20/70 after one of her own teeth was surgically implanted in one of her eyes.  Yeah, you read that right.  She had a TOOTH implanted in her EYE!  I'm totally squeamish when it comes to eyeballs. 

To begin the months-long process, doctors removed one of Thornton’s canine teeth—aka an eyetooth—along with part of the jaw and cut it all down to a shape small enough to replace the cornea. The doctors then drilled a hole into it to insert a lens. In order for the tooth to bind to the lens sufficiently, the implant spent a couple months in the patient’s body. In Thornton’s case, it was implanted near her shoulder.
