Imaginary Styles is a cool site where one woman attempts different hairstyles from classic sci-fi/fantasy films.  Very cool.  Makes me wish I had long hair.  (thanks, Jen!)

Michelle Rhee fires 241 teachers

You've probably heard by now about how D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee has fired 241 school teachers.  737 more teachers could face the chopping block next year.  You couldn't pay me enough money to work under that kind of stress. 

It's so frustrating how the only solution these educator reformers have to help students succeed in Title 1 poverty schools is to fire teachers and dismantle the unions.  Fire all the teachers you want, but until we address the issue of children living in poverty in this country, those test scores are probably never going to improve.  Don't even get me started on Race to the Top.   

 

What I'm Watching

Ryan's Daughter:  Ryan's Daughter is a David Lean film set in Ireland during World War I.  It centers around Rose Ryan, a bored housewife who has an affair with a British soldier.  It's not my favorite Lean film, but the cinematography is gorgeous.  I also want all of Rose's clothes.  Plus, there's a shirtless Robert Mitchum.  3 Stars.

Dead Snow:  This has to be one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen, but I still recommend you watch it because it's about Nazi zombies.  The director also has some weird disembowelment fetish going on, because I think nearly everyone in his film eventually gets their intestines ripped out at some point (including some of the zombies).  However, I think the grossest scene in the film was the outhouse sex scene.  (I had to close my eyes.)  2 1/2 Stars!

The Quiet Family: A strange little Korean film about a family running a lodge in a remote hiking area.  After one of their customers commits suicide, they decide to bury the body because they're afraid the news of his death would be bad for business.  Soon more dead bodies start turning up.  (Can you guess what happens next?)  Has anyone else seen this film because I totally didn't get the ending.    2 Stars.     

Princess Leia’s Hair Makes No Damn Sense

I love this mythbusting article on why Princess Leia's hairstyles are difficult to pull off in real life. 

Let’s start with the obvious: the buns.

These are completely implausible. There’s no visible means of support and considering this hairstyle lasts through being captured by Imperial forces, imprisoned, ineptly rescued (sorry, it’s the truth) and almost being crushed by a garbage compactor, we’re forced to conclude she could have only kept it in place with super glue. Which I hear is not all that great for hair.

Octopuses or octopi? How to pluralize octopus

I have to admit that I really wasn't sure which word to use.  Turns out that it's octopuses (the editor at Merriam-Webster said so), but octopi is perfectly acceptable, too.  So now you know.  And knowing is half the battle, or whatever.

 The mostly charcoal drawings depict ghoulish faces and distorted features. Each sketch has accompanying captions, including one that says, 'Treat Me Like Your Mother Or I'll Eat the Sun,' another that reads 'Goat S****, and a third that says 'I Don't Owe You S***'.

Fecal Implant

A woman receives a fecal implant from her husband.  Now that's love.

 Dr. Khoruts decided his patient needed a transplant. But he didn’t give her a piece of someone else’s intestines, or a stomach, or any other organ. Instead, he gave her some of her husband’s bacteria.

Dr. Khoruts mixed a small sample of her husband’s stool with saline solution and delivered it into her colon. Writing in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology last month, Dr. Khoruts and his colleagues reported that her diarrhea vanished in a day. Her Clostridium difficile infection disappeared as well and has not returned since.

Turns out Tik Tok and California Gurls are the same song only with different god-awful lyrics.  I hate myself for singing these songs in my car sometimes.  Oh, the shame!

Missing the 90's

I don't know if it's because I just turned 30, but lately I've been real nostalgic for the 90's (when I was a teenager).  I've been breaking out the grunge music and watching a lot of Daria.  So probably expect a lot of posts dedicated to that time period.  Anyway, here's a post I found featuring an old clip of Claire Danes (90's version of Molly Ringwald)  on The Jon Stewart show promoting Little Women.  I still can't get over Jon's facial hair back then.  I am also weirded out by the fact that Claire Danes is in that commercial advertising how to grow longer eyelashes.
