Suspiria (1977): Here's another great 70's horror movie that I can't believe it took me so long to watch. Loved it! Those witches should have been interior designers, not ballet teachers. This movie kind of starts out slow, but the ending is totally worth it. Also, ALWAYS make sure to look before you leap. 4 Stars!
Bad Teacher: The jokes aren't all that great & Cameron Diaz's character has absolutely no redeeming qualities at all. However, I think Bad Teacher does a great job of pointing out what high stakes testing has done to our education system. After finding out that she can score a merit pay cash bonus of $5,000 (ha ha, dream on) for having the highest test scores, Diaz's character decides to trade in movie watching in the classroom for actual teaching. Sadly, actual teaching has turned into test prepping and the kids are just as clueless as before when they were just sitting around watching Stand & Deliver. 2 1/2 Stars!
Black Death (2010): After Game of Thrones ended, I needed my Sean Bean fix, so I decided to watch Black Death. It's set during the bubonic plague and Sean Bean's character is on a mission to find out why one village hasn't been inflicted with disease. Here be witches? It was nice to see David Warner and John Lynch again. I personally liked the way it ended, but some people hated it. I thought it was fitting to the whole theme of the film, but whatever. 3 Stars!
Frontier(s): Another French horror film that has convinced me that no good can come from visiting the French countryside. This movie blatantly rips off Hostel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Descent. However, it does a good job of ripping them off, so I kinda didn't mind. Frontiers is about a group of young kids who flee Paris after looting the city during a string of political riots. They escape to the French countryside thinking they'll be safe from the law and the violence (WRONG!). Instead, they find themselves trapped by cannibalistic Nazis who are hellbent on creating a pure race. Um, but apparently thses Nazis are totally not picky about who they procreate with considering the Paris youths are dark haired, dark eyed, and Muslim. Beggars can't be choosers, I guess. 2 1/2 Stars!
Transcendent Man: Um, I wish I could be as optimistic about the merging of technology and man as Ray Kurzweil is, but having seen Battlestar Galactica & Blade Runner, I'm going to have to disagree when he claims it will be a good thing. I don't want to live forever (real or virtually). I don't want chips inserted in me so everyone, everywhere can read my thoughts. I also don't want to make friends with machines. No thanks! 4 Stars!
